No bread? “let them have cake”.

It was only around four weeks in which I knew that I had secured my place in Boston that Mr Donald Trump and wife entered the white house for his four year term as president of the united states. I couldn’t help but wonder if the people I was going to be working with, would share the views of so many Americans. Ultimately, that Trump was a good man and correct for the job of leading the nation.
I didn’t really know that much about the guy before he came into power. All I did know was that he appeared to be a relatively successful business man that seemed to have a lot of different investments in alternative markets. Funnily enough, my flatmate Robbie’s dad, Alex is financial director at Nordan. This is a company that installs windows and frames for buildings. When installing the windows for Trumps new Golf course in Aberdeen, Mr Trump just forgot to pay for the course and the windows that went with it. Just one victim the robbery that this man has got away with. As if his questionable campaign didn’t cause enough up stir, Trump is also the first president to not have a dog in over 130 years. The man clearly is a maniac.
I would like to add before writing this blog, my feelings towards the man were quite impartial. Like I said, clearly not a great guy, but I really didn’t know enough to have an opinion. If you continue reading my blogs you will find that is one of my pet hates. When people have opinions on things they know nothing about. If you are passionate about something, tell the world, but if you don’t know, try and keep these to yourself. That’s just me though.
Much like many other students, when studying History a few years ago, I came across a woman called Marie-Antoinette. Marie-Antoinette was bride of France’s King Louis XVI. Her claim to fame was that when France was in utter distress due a lack of food, her advisers told her there was no bread for the people. In which her response was, no bread? “let them have cake”. Many historians argue if she actually did say this, but nonetheless, its a symbol of the fact, that though leader of her country and it’s citizens, she was completely oblivious to the distress of her people. To this day she is still used to implement the gulf in society between the rich and the poor.
Marie-Antoinette. Apparently you can have your cake and eat it.
Fast forward 300 hundred years to September 2017. Puerto Rico is visited by Mr Donald Trump after hurricane Maria wiped out so many homes in the country. I won’t go into detail about this as most know about the event and the catastrophic outcomes. What i’m about to write next, genuinely really upsets me. Trump visited a location more badly effected than most, to show the press he was fulfilling his moral obligation and helping the people of Puerto Rico. He himself was staying in Guanbayo, a more wealthy area of the country that was recovering to the disaster quicker than most. I won’t judge him for this, as being president of the states, you are entitled to a few perks of the job. A nice hotel is definitely an acceptable one. However, on a visit he went to the town of Caguas, 10 miles southeast of Guaybano. This saw 1200 houses destroyed by the Hurricane Maria. He entered a church that had relief support for the victims of the hurricane. The church was also distributing water purification kits, and a member explained the process to the president.

“Wait,” Trump said, “you put it in dirty water?”
“And then you can drink it after 10 to 12 hours,” she explained.
“Would you do it? Would you drink it?”
“Sure,” she said.
“Really?” Trump said, a disgusted look coming across his face.
“Really,” she said.
“Is this your company or something?” Trump asked the woman, seeming suspicious of the aggressive pitch.
“No,” she said, “I’m part of the church.”

As if the fact the president did not insult these people enough by protesting that the relief was putting strain on the federal budget, along with throwing paper towels into the crowd. It honestly just shows that this president is absolutely clueless to what is going on around him. He has no idea of the actual implications these disasters have on people and what they have to do to get through them. Why on earth would someone drink filthy water? Well maybe because it’s their only option! I spoke to a friend of mine, Gabi who is from Puerto Rico. She showed me some photos her mother sent of the land and the destruction. It’s absolutely horrifying stuff.
In the midst of all this earth shattering news, hurricanes, innocent people killed at festivals, astronomical prices of education and health care, this country needs a leader. A strong leader with the best interest of it’s people at heart. Ultimately not someone who asks a volunteer why they are helping for free and drinking dirty water.
Trump is a puppet to his advisers who clearly aren’t very good at advising. Marie-Antoinette at least attempted to provide an alternative, Trump just expects everyone trying to help to have a motive for their actions. History is repeating itself and we are letting everything we once frowned upon happen again. Only 3 and a bit years left America…
